Merry Christmas and the Gift of Sanity

As a fat, rumpled, and crumpled old Jew, I want to wish a genuinely Merry Christmas to one and all.

For me the greatest thing we could do for all of us in the coming year is to restore sanity in our beloved and beleaguered Republic. Let's all work on giving the nation the gift of practical and common sense for which the USA was once well known.

All the best.

  1. I could not agree more. Thank you for this uplifting post.

  2. And let's stop feeding the media news cycle on these protests. Or giving them the attention they want for "voicing their first amendment rights". No clicking on articles or posts, and click off the channel when it comes up. Now that would be a great gift

  4. Thank you for helping to accomplish that. We appreciate you, and wish the best in the new year.

  5. A belated Happy Chanukah to you, Mr. Amselem. While a Protestant Christian myself (albeit with Jewish ancestors), I sosmetimes wonder if Chanukah isn't gaining a new relevance and importance in our days, when we are all being forced to bow to something that is unclean.

I sincerely pray that God would not enter into such a judgment with his servants that we need to do the Maccabee thing and rise in armed revolt against The Worst Generation's enthronement of their own lusts and improvidence (and I shamefacedly admit to being part of that Worst Generation). My short and undistinguished diplomatic career brought me too close to aftermaths of other peoples' "revolutionary moments" fro me to have any romantic illusions about what such things bring to most people. But I also believe that we are now governed by too many who have never outgrown their youthful illusions about the likes of Mao, Guevara, free love, and the like; and such people have been very ad for America.

  8. And a happy Chanukah to you from this skinny wrinkled old Jew. Remember Chanukah is a celebration of resistance to tyranny, may we relearn its message.

As well, a merry Christmas to all the Christians here.

  10. Happy Boxing Day to you in Oz. When I get too discouraged about present events, it helps to think about something truly glorious.

    1. Yes indeed, truly glorious. I can well do without tv (and do) but two vitally important aspects of my life are my books and my music. A day without music is unthinkable for me and as I type this I am surrounded by bookshelves on three walls floor to ceiling containing a lifetimes collection.

  11. My God bless you and your Family, and keep you safe and healthy in the New Year.
I have been working my way through Jack Devine's book, "Good Hunting". I am certain that you interacted with him through the years. That was back in the day when we had people in the administration who loved and protected the USA.

  12. The body politic needs a cure to restore common sense after the nonsense that has brought us to this pass. A large part of that cure is accomplished with joy and laughter, not just at the idiot politicians but also to clear away some of the pointless anger they like to generate. And since you mention Christmas and sanity, I suggest you watch the YouTube video liked here, which is the Marx Brothers bit on the sanity clause.

    1. I would like to agree, but for the progressives of the world the current state of affairs is only proof that they are on the winning side. They look at the current state of affairs and say "yep, the world is moving in our direction and we have to continue to push it that way." I find it amazing that so many people can look at history and think Marxism is the wave of the future, but it appears to be what they really think.

    2. "I find it amazing that so many people can look at history and think Marxism is the wave of the future, but it appears to be what they really think." Kind of like the Slim Pickens character in that Bond film where he sits astride the A bomb and celebrates his accomplishment as he falls to a predicted end. Thus with Marxism.

    3. Wasn't that "Dr. Strangelove"?

    4. Whitewall...

I was rooting for "Slim Pickins". I knew him as a boy. The portrayal is that he was doing his duty. He did it to the bitter end. It was the STATE that fucked him. It was the Govt that subsumed...more and more.

    5. You knew him? I'll bet that was interesting. Did his screen "accent" match his normal life speaking? It is the State under Marxism that always "gets us in the end". But those who control the State get the rush of power until the bomb goes off.

It was "Dr. Strangelove". I always get my fictions mixed up with my dysfunctional ideologies. Seems to always be my "stone to push".

    6. I read once that when Slim Pickens arrived in the UK to do 'Dr Strangelove' he was dressed in buckskin jacket, cowboy boots, big Stetson etc and everyone thought he had arrived 'in character' as they say but no, that was how Slim always dressed off set. Also he had never left the USA before so obtaining a passport was a bit of a scramble apparently.
The best Slim Pickens quote I ever read was "after Strangelove the dressing rooms and the paychecks got a lot bigger". Great movie. Sellars was also supposed to play Major Kong in addition to his three roles but injured himself so Slim was drafted in, for which we should all be grateful because IMHO he stole that picture.

Thank you, Dip, for the daily enlightenment, entertainment and even the odd chucke. And thank you to your readers also, for their insight and most fascinating opinions and observations on the world of puzzlement. God Bless all of you and those who you love.

  18. Suppose I best get something in before the New Year's upon us - Second Syd B's last paragraph.

    Oh & Whitewall?

Slim Pickens riding the bomb was a Kubrick, not a Bond. (As if it matters.)

To All, the Best in the New Year.

  25. I hope I'm not the mop up commenter, but I too wish the so much appreciated postings, nearly always agreed upon, of our great leader, L.A. and his so enjoyable wife, too, and the beautiful pooches, as well, the best of New Years, and a belated Happy Chanukah, from the sometimes commenter, and usual lurker, another Protestant and also proudly Jewish ancestry. I offer should it be needed, the reminder: ”Blessed be the Lord my Rock, Who trains my hands for war, And my fingers for battle” -Psalm 144:1 and in proper humility, we all should feel in life, the additional thought: ”For there is not a just man on earth who does good, and does not sin.” -Ecclesiastes 7:20

I offer another well written author's timely piece on what we face in the coming days:
