An American Coup D'etat?

Reparations

Reparations.

Lots of politicians and pundits talking about "reparations." Not very clear on how much? For what? To whom? By whom? A good legal definition and some quick descriptions of reparations in the recent past can be found here.

Cory Booker, deeply affected by his previous life as Spartacus, the rebellious slave, has introduced a bill in the Senate to establish a reparations commission:
Such a commission would seek to remedy generations-worth of discrimination as a result of "overt policies fueled by white supremacy and racism that have oppressed African-Americans economically for generations," the New Jersey Democrat said in a statement, in addition to policies "that have ushered millions of Americans into the middle class" but "systematically excluded blacks."
"This bill is a way of addressing head-on the persistence of racism, white supremacy and implicit racial bias in our country," Booker added. "It will bring together the best minds to study the issue and propose solutions that will finally begin to right the economic scales of past harms and make sure we are a country where all dignity and humanity is affirmed."
This proposal moves significantly beyond those kicking around for about 150 years to provide some sort of government (aka taxpayer) reparations to former slaves, and then to descendants of former slaves.

Booker's proposal, a virtue-signaling gab fest, if enacted would produce what we all can predict, to wit, a conclusion drafted by the usual commission of prog academics and staffers ("the best minds" don'cha know?) and herded along by the usual prog pundits and race hustlers--a permanent gig for Al Sharpton, for example. You don't know what the commission would conclude? You come from the dark side of the moon?

Let me fill you in (SPOILER ALERT): America and its supremacist white population were and are racist, evil patriarchs who hate black and brown people, as well as poor people, women, gays, lesbians, transgenders, immigrants, Native Americans, and, of course, the environment. Have I missed anything? If so, please fill in additional details and forward care of: Spartacus, Senate, New Rome, DC.

The commission, of course, would recommend reparations. What does that mean? Nobody really knows, except reparations would need management by the "best minds," which means, of course, creating a new, massive government bureaucracy and programs, lots of new programs, to hand out reparations in the form of cash, goodies, or services to those so afflicted by America that they never leave--and, in fact, the commission would invite more people to come here to get oppressed.

We, of course, will need racial purity commissions to determine who is or is not black or brown, and, hence, oppressed. We need a percentage of blood rule. Shall we adopt South African standards? How about Nazi standards of racial purity? Will somebody such as Barack Obama, get "a reparations taste," a man so oppressed by America that he became the world's most powerful man, and descends on both his white American mother's and his black Kenyan father's side from slave owners and traders? Will billionaire Oprah get a cut of the action? How about Bill Cosby? How about Spartacus, himself? Will every illegal alien from El Salvador also get a slice? What about people born as one race or gender but who now identify as another race or gender? The "best minds" have their work cut out for them.

One minor suggestion: perhaps the Democrat Party, the party of slavery and Jim Crow, should cough up for slavery reparations? Just a suggestion.

Can't wait to see this unfold.

  1. Are the tribes who captured and sold those slaves, as producers and ultimate beneficiaries of the first order effect of selling them, going to pay for it? Or are we going to dispense bills by fiat against 'the deplorables'?
"It's ok.. those participants in the supply side of the market were racially inferior and thus not mentally capable as a culture to be held to account for their actions." <-- that's the official progressive line whether they say it or not.

Treat people with love, dignity and respect. That is not a burden placed on governments, that's the one and only real 'individual mandate'.

I'm so tired of people trying to fix other people through legislation.

  5. Is there a case to be made that blacks born in the USA, versus born in Africa, have suffered financial harm? Seems very unlikely.

    1. Black per capita income is $18,400 in the USA.

      Slaves came from:

      Senegal, per capita income $3,500
      Ghana, per capita income $4,700
      Nigeria, per capita income $5,900

Source for where slaves came from: https://www.history.com/news/what-part-of-africa-did-most-slaves-come-from

The rather obvious conclusion is that most blacks in the USA today are considerably better off than if they had stayed in their home countries.

  7. "Reparations"?! That doesn't sound right. How about something like "The Great Society" or "The War on Poverty"? We can all get behind those and then we can throw Trillions - with a capital T - of dollars at it to finally make things right.

I'm sure it will work just like I'm sure Senator Platypus is the one to make it work just so long as he can ignore history and lie about the present and the future long enough to make it through to the next day, month, year, decade...until the money finally runs out.

  8. I hope Sen. Booker tries to get some money out of the string of states from Mauretania down to Angola, since those are the heirs of the ones who did the actual hunting and selling.

  9. Maybe this nonsense should be given some gentle encouragement. After all, we know that the Democrat Party is a ramshackle coalition of groups with little in common and very different objectives.

Once the commission gets going and it starts to become plain just what this is going to cost the Person of Wrong Color working class, directly and indirectly, Democrats will lose the Union vote. Liberal women will be next to quit -- after all, even People of the Right Color oppress their women. Then the Chinese will quite reasonably demand their share of the pie, since Chinese laborers brought to the US to build the transcontinental railroad were treated much worse than slaves. Since they will find they are also Persons of the Wrong Color, they will leave. And the Japanese will realize that Democrats sent them to concentration camps a century after the slaves were freed -- but they are not in line to get anything either. They will fall out of the Democrat coalition too.

With a little bit of prodding, this commission could lead directly to the extinction of the Democrat Party.

  11. As I've indicated elsewhere, it seems appropriate to let reparations go forward just so long as the descendants of those who fought to free the slaves get at least double the reward. After all, they risked their lives to uplift the downtrodden and abused.

Yes, you've guessed correctly, I would benefit from such a program.

    1. I do believe you've got it!

My scheme was to identify as black, lesbian and disabled: that'd get me on the gravy train, and I was getting prepared to carry a wheelchair to some platform with a microphone, so that I could proclaim to all & sundry that down deep inside, I'm blacker than Al Sharpton could dream of being-

But your idea sounds much better, and there's an element of truth in it; but do you think that'll disqualify it in the minds of Democrats? They're not much for truth. Or justice, or the American Way! And we all know who kept the slaves, don't we.

      Hmmm. This needs more consideration!

No one asked him if that means they get double reparations.

  17. Let's say it is possible to identify the descendants of USA slaves, why would the USA government be expected to fund the reparations? The USA government did not own the slaves, participate in the international slave trade, or run the domestic slave trade.

Of course, I would need some serious ID that they claim they're too damned poor and ignorant to get in order to vote but that's a minor matter.
